My Personal “WHY?”
At our Spring ICF Iowa retreat in May, we talked about how we can continue delivering value to our members. Since then, we have been asking members to share: “WHY are you part of ICF Iowa?“
I thought I would take this opportunity to share my personal “WHY?”.
I joined ICF Iowa five years ago. I instantly enjoyed the connection to the people I met at that first meeting. Carrie Copley, Dick Hannasch, Christi Hegstad, Blair Wagner, Michelle Rembert, Ann Wright, and Lisa Brovold were amongst the first few members I met and continue to be good friends. They are inspiring individuals and talented Coaches, and I knew if people like this were part of the membership, I found my people! Since then, I have met many more Coaches, who also have become treasured friends. Each one shares a heart of service, a kindness of spirit and a desire for personal growth. (Yes, Coaches are a cool bunch!)
As I have watched our Chapter grow, I feel tremendous admiration for the people who continue to move our chapter forward. Over the past five years, I have served as Membership Director, VP and now President of the ICF Iowa Board. I have learned something from each person I have worked along-side as a Board member. Leadership is a shared responsibility on a non-profit and we have some amazing leaders in our Chapter! In addition to the talents and hard work of past and current Board members, I’ve had a lot of fun serving. Many laughs between the work!
I value the personal growth I get by being a part of this Chapter. We have and will continue to offer great programs that help me be stronger as a professional Coach. I continue to reflect on the practical insights from programs we had earlier this year. I have been able to take something away from each one of our programs this year.
ICF Global has several programs that serve my professional growth too. I enjoy being a part of a community that has access to so many world-class resources. Recently I attended the ICF Tennessee Chapter program meeting to hear from Marion Franklin, an MCC Coach who was doing a Coaching demonstration. It was thought-provoking and challenging. I love the programs that are offered through this organization.
Finally, my “why” is about service - to other Coaches, our community and our world. I value our efforts to find ways to serve in community together. In July, our ICF Iowa Chapter partnered with Mosaic of Central Iowa to hold a picnic at Racoon Park in West Des Moines Iowa. We played BINGO, placed Kindness rocks around the park, had some snacks and enjoyed nature together. The picnic left a smile on my face for the entire day!
I feel honored to be a part of this talented community of Coaches. My “Why” is because this is the right place for me. ICF Iowa has made me a better Coach, provided meaning friendships and allows me to invest in a noble profession that serves humanity in a meaningful way.
In warm regards,
Dorene MacVey
